Rui Moreira will serve as the national representative for Luís Marques Mendes’ campaign. The presidential candidate made this announcement during a visit to the Ferreira de Castro school group in Algueirão-Mem Martins, explaining that he chose to make this announcement days after the local elections held on Sunday.
“The reason for my choice is clear. Dr. Rui Moreira is an independent figure, unaffiliated with any party. This will significantly expand and enhance the inclusivity and reach of my candidacy,” stated Luís Marques Mendes.
Marques Mendes praised the former Mayor of Porto for consistently winning every election he contested.
“He is what I would call a true senator of the Republic. He is respected, credible, competent, experienced, and truly knowledgeable about national issues. From north to south, the Portuguese people appreciate and respect Rui Moreira,” he added.
He also expressed being “very pleased and touched” by Moreira’s acceptance of the invitation.
On Sunday, the candidate had expressed that he would be pleased with possible support from Rui Moreira, noting that any candidate would welcome the backing of Porto’s mayor.
“Obviously, if Rui Moreira supports me, I will be satisfied. Any candidate would appreciate support from Rui Moreira. I do not know if Rui Moreira will support me, support another candidate, or decide to support no one. I respect his decision. In such matters, no pressure should be applied,” Marques Mendes told journalists during a visit to the Hospital de Misericórdia in Vila Verde, Braga district.
The presidential candidate Luís Marques Mendes expressed today that he would be pleased with the potential support of Rui Moreira, noting that any candidate would value the backing of the mayor of Porto.
