“The results indicate a reduction in the electoral expression of CDU, whether in its voting, mandates, or the number of municipalities where it holds a majority,” stated Paulo Raimundo in remarks to journalists at a hotel in Lisbon, where CDU’s election night was held.

The PCP secretary-general expressed that the outcome “does not reflect the recognition of the path, work, and intervention” of CDU-elected officials in the municipalities and “will negatively affect the conditions to ensure governance that aligns with the interests of the populations.”

However, Paulo Raimundo noted that despite being “generally negative,” the result for CDU also contains “elements of resistance,” highlighted by the achievement of majorities in 11 municipalities, including four new municipalities: Mora, Sines, Montemor-o-Novo, and Aljustrel.

These are “new achievements, thus disproving many predictions of CDU’s inevitable loss and confirming the real potential for progress and to regain municipalities where a negative outcome has now been known,” he said.
