A 25-year-old man has been detained by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on suspicion of attempting to murder a 40-year-old man in Portimão on the afternoon of Monday, October 13.
Investigators reported that the assailant and the victim were consuming alcoholic beverages on the street near a café when a “heated argument over trivial matters” escalated into mutual offenses.
As the confrontation unfolded, the suspect reacted “disproportionately and inappropriately,” according to the PJ, by pulling out a utility knife from his pocket and stabbing the victim in the neck.
The authorities noted that the wound, approximately 25 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters deep, was not fatal only due to the rapid medical assistance provided.
The injured man had to undergo emergency surgery due to his life-threatening condition and remains in intensive care.
Meanwhile, the suspect was apprehended after sufficient evidence was gathered, leading to his detention.
The detainee is scheduled to appear for an initial judicial interrogation to determine the appropriate coercive measures.
