
The voter turnout for today’s local elections reached 43.42% by 16:00, a rate higher than that recorded at the same time four years ago, according to the Secretariat-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration.
Based on figures released by the Secretariat-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration (SGMAI), over four million people had cast their votes by 16:00.
Compared with the previous local elections held on September 26, 2021, voter participation slightly increased, with 42.34% having voted by the same time four years ago.
The SGMAI reported at 12:00 that the voter turnout for the local elections was 21.72%, exceeding the rate at the same time during the 2021 elections.
Polling stations opened at 08:00 and will remain open until 19:00. In the Azores, due to the one-hour time difference, polling stations open and close 60 minutes later than those on the mainland and Madeira.
More than 9.3 million voters are eligible to participate in these local elections, based on census data provided by the Secretariat-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration.
Out of 9,303,840 registered voters, 9,262,722 are nationals, while 18,319 are foreign EU voters, and 22,799 are non-EU foreigners, both registered in national territory.
Voters will select the governing bodies of 308 Municipal Chambers, 308 Municipal Assemblies, and 3,221 Parish Assemblies, using three separate ballots.
In total, 1,584 lists from parties, coalitions, and citizen groups are contesting the Municipal Chambers, 1,519 for the Municipal Assemblies, and 9,764 lists for Parish Assemblies, as per the latest SGMAI data.
