The Port of Aveiro Authority announced an ongoing dredging maintenance plan with an investment of 280,000 euros, expected to conclude within a month.
“Dredged sediments are being deposited south of the first jetty at Barra/Costa Nova to reinforce the dune cordon in that area,” the statement says, adding that the operation is conducted closely with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
The dredged materials, estimated at a maximum of 135,000 cubic meters, will be used to strengthen the dune cordon through direct pipeline repulsion onto the emerged beach.
“Although the sediments from maintenance dredging, immersed off Costa Nova, aim to mitigate coastal erosion, this action is distinct for its more direct and immediate impact on the recovery and stabilization of the dune cordon,” the statement explains.
The port authority emphasizes that the project “aims to ensure normal navigation safety conditions and reflects the Port Authority’s commitment to sustainability and coastal protection.”
Simultaneously, dredging work is ongoing at the Largo Fishing Port and the Oudinot Garden leisure dock to improve navigability and safety for long-distance fishing companies and nautical recreational activities.
“In recent years, the Port of Aveiro has effectively contributed to dune cordon reinforcement by immersing an average annual volume of 500,000 cubic meters of sediments,” it adds.
The Port Authority of Aveiro also highlights that cooperation with the APA “has ensured that dredging activities at the Port of Aveiro contribute not only to navigation safety but also to the territory’s resilience against coastal dynamics and current climate challenges.”
