The Aviation and Airport Workers’ Union (Sitava) and the Handling, Aviation, and Airport Workers’ Union (STHAA) are set to discuss “ANAC [National Civil Aviation Authority] decisions regarding licenses, the future of SPdH [Menzies] and its nearly four thousand jobs,” stated Fernando Henriques of Sitava.
“We seek assurances about the future of SPdH [Menzies], job security, and acquired rights,” he emphasized, mentioning “commitments already made by Menzies for the future company agreement in 2026.”
“In defending these principles, we do not rule out any form of protest,” the union leader added, acknowledging the possibility of strikes and demonstrations.
In the preliminary report of the tender, accessed by Lusa, the jury led by Sofia Simões awarded a score of 95.2523 to the Clece/South consortium, linked to Iberia, with Menzies (formerly Groundforce) receiving a score of 93.0526.
The preliminary report issued by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) indicated that one of the selection criteria for the winner involved submitting frameworks identifying the minimum number of material (NMM) and human resources (NMH) “to be assigned to baggage handling, cargo and mail handling, and airside operations per airport for two theoretical scenarios.”
It was in this aspect, termed a theoretical exercise with two scenarios per airport, that the Spanish consortium Clece/South scored better than Menzies, whereas in other evaluation criteria—material and human resources—the scores were identical.
“Menzies regrets this result and disagrees with the awarded score,” the company stated, asserting that it believes its proposal “demonstrates proven operational excellence, continuity, and a fully qualified workforce composed of over 3,500 employees who consistently deliver high safety and quality services to clients and the community,” the company noted in a statement last week.
