The Portuguese ambassador to São Tomé, Luís Leandro da Silva, announced the initiation of the first training program of its kind, prioritized as a part of the technical-police cooperation between the two nations. This initiative aligns with the Portuguese Cooperation Strategy 2030, emphasizing security, migration, and human rights as fundamental pillars of joint action.
“This training represents a significant step in enhancing the operational capabilities of São Tomé and Príncipe’s Migration and Borders Service by equipping it with essential knowledge, technical skills, and tools needed for air border control,” stated Luís Leandro da Silva.
The training, conducted by PSP personnel who traveled to São Tomé for this purpose, lasted two weeks and included the sharing of specialized knowledge on information systems, risk analysis, and the prevention and combat of human trafficking.
“This was more than just a course; it was a journey of professional growth and transformation. Participants faced complex challenges, overcame obstacles, and, above all, developed as professionals and as a team. They are now undoubtedly better prepared to carry out their border guarding mission with rigor, ethics, and responsibility,” added the Portuguese ambassador.
The Defense and Internal Order Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe, Horário Sousa, expressed gratitude to the Portuguese Government, particularly the Ministry of Internal Administration of Portugal, highlighting that the training will improve communication channels between both countries’ border control authorities.
The Director of the Migration and Borders Service (SMF) of São Tomé and Príncipe, Eridson Trindade, remarked that the initiative will also contribute to facilitating mobility and aligning best practices between the two nations.
“This closer relationship will naturally ease mobility, as we can now anticipate potential issues for passengers traveling between São Tomé and Portugal,” said Eridson Trindade.
“Understanding Portugal’s operational methods aids our technicians in ensuring passengers depart with greater assurance that all procedures will proceed smoothly,” Eridson Trindade added.
