Founder of the weekly newspaper Expresso in 1973 and SIC in 1992, Pinto Balsemão “was a true gentleman — a man of principles, word, and firm convictions, always characterized by elegance and respect in both his professional activity and civic life,” noted the board of directors, chaired by Joaquim Carreira, in a statement.
“An unwavering defender of freedom of expression and the press, he believed these could only be guaranteed through economic independence,” the statement read.
The board of Lusa also highlighted that “throughout his remarkable career, he stood out for his visionary, innovative, and transformational spirit, anticipating changes and building institutions that became pillars of free and pluralistic communication in Portugal.”
“His intelligence, humanism, and dedication to public service left an inspiring legacy for generations of professionals and citizens,” it concluded.
Francisco Pinto Balsemão, former PSD leader, ex-prime minister, and founder of Expresso and SIC, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.
The government declared two days of national mourning, coinciding with the funeral ceremonies that began on Wednesday and conclude today.
