The price of extra virgin olive oil was among those experiencing significant increases over the past week, according to the latest price monitoring by DECO PROteste, alongside a rise in the cost of the overall food basket.
“In the past week, from October 15 to 22, besides extra virgin olive oil, products that saw the largest percentage price hikes included whole grain cereals (up 15%), sliced Flemish cheese (up 13%), and mackerel (up 9%),” stated the consumer protection organization’s website.
Olive Oil Stands Out
According to DECO PROteste, extra virgin olive oil was among the products with the most significant price increase over the past week, with a 75-centiliter bottle priced at 7.17 euros on October 22, which is 52 cents (an 8% increase) more than it was the week before.
“This is the first time in 12 consecutive weeks that the price of extra virgin olive oil has exceeded 7 euros. It was priced at 9.52 euros in the first week of this year but has mostly been below 7 euros since April. In April 2024, it reached 12 euros, the highest price since DECO PROteste began monitoring the prices of 63 food items in January 2022,” noted the consumer protection organization’s website.
Food Basket Also More Expensive
The price of the monitored food basket by the organization rose by 48 cents (an increase of 0.20%) over the last week and now costs 242.24 euros.
“At the beginning of this year, it was 6.07 euros less (a decrease of 2.57%). Nearly four years ago, on January 5, 2022, the same products could be bought for 54.54 euros less (a 29.06% decrease),” the DECO PROteste website reported.
Since January 2022, DECO PROteste has been tracking the price evolution of essential food items, analyzing the total cost of a basket each Wednesday based on the prices collected the previous day at major supermarkets with online stores.
“Initially, the average price per product is calculated across all available online stores in the simulator. The cost of the basket for a specific day is obtained by summing the average price of all products,” it is explained.
The Price Increase Champions
Comparing this week’s prices with those from the first week of the year, January 1, 2025, “the largest percentage price increase was observed in products like broccoli (up 34%), eggs (up 32%), and oranges (up 24%),” stated the consumer protection organization.
Since DECO PROteste commenced this analysis on January 5, 2022, “the greatest percentage increases have been in beef for boiling (up 104%), eggs (up 86%), and oranges (up 71%).”

It is still too early to provide concrete figures, but Deborah Barbosa, president of the Bakery Industry and Commerce Association, believes that the price increase of bread will align with inflation.
