Nationality law? Mariana Leitão welcomes “the apparent consensus”

“It is relevant that there appears to be a consensus among the four major parties on the necessity to indeed revise the nationality law,” stated Mariana Leitão, speaking to Lusa on the sidelines of the European liberals’ congress in Brussels.

A day after the nationality revision passed in committee without a guaranteed absolute majority, Mariana Leitão emphasized that one of the issues to be considered is retroactivity, advocated by IL, as “people need to have legal predictability” to “safeguard their rights if they are already in the process.”

Now, “what is important is to ensure that, like the foreigners law, it comes into force and there is a predictable legal framework,” she pointed out.

“I think that with these changes that have been made recently, including the nationality law, a regulatory framework can be achieved that allows people to know what they can expect when they immigrate to our country. To know what rights they have, what duties they must fulfill, and that is very relevant, because we cannot condone or allow the lack of control that existed in terms of illegal immigration,” Mariana Leitão further stated.

On Friday, the Government’s proposal to revise the nationality law was approved, incorporating amendments introduced by the PSD and CDS, but support from Chega in the final global vote is still not guaranteed.

In the final global vote, the Government’s proposal to revise the nationality law must be approved with a qualified majority, securing at least 116 favorable votes out of a total of 230 deputies, which is not yet guaranteed.

Chega approved, in committee, some points of the Government’s proposal to revise the nationality law, while PS, BE, and PCP announced their overall opposition to the process.

The president of Iniciativa Liberal, Mariana Leitão, was in Brussels today for the first time as the party president at the Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party.

In her speech, she highlighted the need for the European Union to diversify its supplies to avoid dependence on others and to reduce bureaucracy to be economically competitive.
