
“The President of the Republic congratulates Catherine Connolly for her overwhelming victory in the Irish presidential election” and extends “best wishes for success in her new role, which she assumes in November,” stated a note from the Presidential website.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also expressed hope that under the new Irish President’s leadership, “the strengthening and deepening of the excellent relations between Portugal and Ireland, two close, friendly, and partner countries, will continue.”
Independent left-wing candidate Catherine Connolly won Friday’s Irish presidential election with more than 63% of the vote.
According to the official results published today, Catherine Connolly defeated centrist Heather Humphreys, who received 29.5% of the votes.
Connolly will succeed Michael Higgins, who has held the presidency since 2011.
