A Portuguese-French citizen has been apprehended by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in the Coimbra area, following an arrest warrant issued by French authorities. The individual was sentenced to three years in prison for engaging in online fraud.
In a statement released on Thursday, inspectors detailed that the man repeatedly committed various crimes throughout 2011. He made contact with victims online, posting ads offering items like smartphones and tablets for sale or expressing interest in purchasing them.
When selling, victims never received the products they had paid for. When he was the buyer, sellers received a cheque that could not be cashed, due to the account being closed or having insufficient funds.
The individual will now appear before the Court of Appeal of Coimbra, where appropriate preventive measures will be determined.
