Seven individuals of Polish nationality were rescued early Sunday morning following an “engine failure” of their boat off the coast of Caminha, in the district of Viana do Castelo.
The Polish-flagged yacht was sailing approximately 12 nautical miles (around 22.2 kilometers) west of the Portuguese town of Caminha, as reported in a statement released this afternoon.
“Following an alert received at 3:05 a.m. via the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon), crew members from the Viana do Castelo Lifeboat Station, as well as personnel from the Local Command of the Viana do Castelo Maritime Police, were immediately activated,” detailed the National Maritime Authority (AMN) in a Facebook post.
According to the explanation, “upon arrival at the vessel, the Lifeboat Station crew found that the individuals were in good physical condition, with no need for medical assistance,” and subsequently towed it to the Viana do Castelo Marina, as it posed a danger to navigation and the persons onboard.
The yacht will only be permitted to sail again after undergoing an inspection to ensure safety conditions.
The Local Command of the Viana do Castelo Maritime Police is handling the incident.
