Costa says Portugal speaks with “one voice” on foreign policy and refuses to comment on housing veto

Prime Minister António Costa said today that Portugal always speaks “with one voice” when it comes to foreign policy, rejecting controversy, and refused to comment on the President’s veto of the housing package.

“As you know, I have a rule – and I like to keep to rules – which is that when we’re abroad we don’t talk about domestic policy issues and when we’re talking about foreign policy Portugal always speaks with one voice,” said António Costa on his arrival in São Tomé and Príncipe, where he is taking part in the summit of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) on Sunday.

“When the President of the Republic speaks, when the Prime Minister speaks, when the President of the Assembly of the Republic speaks, when the Minister for Foreign Affairs speaks, we speak with one voice, so there are no polemics,” he said, without specifying what he was referring to.

On arrival in São Tomé, the Prime Minister was asked if he had already spoken to the President of the Republic after he vetoed the changes to the housing legislation and about the controversies that have marked the national news.
