The Municipality of Trancoso issued a statement this Saturday expressing condolences following the death of four young people originally from the region who perished in an accident in France while on their way to Paris.
“The Municipality of Trancoso expresses its deep sorrow over the tragic passing of four young individuals from the Trancoso region, last night, in France,” read a statement published on Facebook.
“To the grieving families, the municipality extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest solidarity.”
According to French authorities cited by the AFP, the youths died after their car veered off the road and crashed into an unspecified object, subsequently catching fire.
The victims include two young men, aged 16 and 18, and two young women, both aged 18, as per Antoine Celle, deputy prosecutor-general of Bourg-en-Bresse commune in France, in statements to AFP.
Antoine Celle explained that the young couples “held Portuguese nationality and resided in Switzerland” and were traveling to Paris.
Initial findings “do not suggest the consumption of drugs or alcohol,” the deputy prosecutor-general added, noting that autopsies have been ordered. The accident occurred at 10:30 PM local time (9:30 PM in Lisbon) on Friday.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has already extended condolences to the family, stating that he is “monitoring the situation.”
