Romão Lavadinho served as president of AIL from 2002 to 2023.
Expressing deep sorrow over his passing, AIL states in a release that the dedication and mission of the former leader “marked indelibly the defense of tenants’ rights” in Portugal.
“His tireless commitment to social justice, dialogue, and the construction of fair solutions for the rental sector constitute a legacy that will continue to inspire the work of AIL and everyone who believes in equitable and dignified access to housing,” it emphasizes.
For over two decades, he was a key figure in significant moments of associative and political life, notably in the struggles of 2004/2005 and 2012/2013, “tirelessly fighting for tenants’ rights and the right to housing for all.”
Deemed an “irreplaceable loss,” AIL extended its “deepest condolences” to Romão Lavadinho’s family, friends, and colleagues.
