The severe weather overnight has caused damage in Aveiro, specifically at the Clube de Vela Costa Nova. Strong waves and rain sank a moliceiro, temporarily anchored at the harbor.
The club took to social media to report the incident and share images of the scene.
“Last night’s severe weather once again caused damage at the Clube de Vela Costa Nova. The strong southeast waves, combined with the ebb tide and rain, sank a moliceiro that was temporarily anchored in our harbor,” stated the post, which also mentioned that the moliceiro will be removed when the tide recedes.
The vessel is now positioned between the bottom and the breakwater pontoon.
The district of Aveiro remains under a yellow alert until 6:00 am tomorrow, with expected west quadrant waves reaching 4 to 5 meters.
Continental Portugal and the Madeira archipelago are experiencing rain, wind, and maritime agitation due to the effects of depression Bram. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued alerts.
According to IPMA, depression Bram, named by the Irish Meteorological Service, formed in the western Atlantic and is moving east towards the Azores archipelago before heading to Ireland.
The IPMA states, “This depression is associated with a cold front of moderate to strong activity, which will gradually cross the mainland from the northwest to the southeast starting the afternoon of the 9th [today], reaching the southern region only during the night/morning of the 10th [Wednesday].”
This situation will result in persistent and occasionally heavy rain across most of the mainland, starting early this morning in Minho and Douro Litoral and gradually spreading to other regions.
Additionally, this weather event will be accompanied by strong winds from the south quadrant along the west coast and in the highlands until mid-afternoon today, with gusts between 70 and 90 kilometers per hour (km/h), especially in the North and Center regions.
