“Naturally, this is an issue sensitive to the average citizen, but I believe it needs to be analyzed, because mayors also deserve to have salaries compatible with their responsibilities. The mayors and our municipal workers,” said the official after being elected today as the president of ANMP for the next four years.
For Pimpão, the revisions should include “all those dedicated to local power,” because the “contribution that municipalities have made to the development of the country” should be matched by “salary appreciation.”
“I wanted to share with you a concern I have as a city council president. It’s the need to increase and appreciate the salaries of public administration workers and leaders, in our city councils, because we need to retain talent in our councils. For that, they also deserve to see their careers valued, along with fairer, more transparent evaluation systems that value merit,” he stated.
“I have no problem saying this. It is not a banner, it is not a priority, but it is also an area that should be considered,” he noted.
Hundreds of mayors are gathering today and Sunday at a congress in Viana do Castelo following the local elections to elect new ANMP leaders and debate the most relevant topics for municipalities in the coming years, namely autonomy, decentralization, local financing, sustainability, and territorial cohesion.
Today, the first topic under discussion was “Autonomy and Decentralization,” and on Sunday, the mayor of Loures (PS), Ricardo Leão, will bring the topic of “Local Financing” for debate, considering that a new local finance law is one of the main demands of the mayors.
On the same day, Francisco Lopes (PSD), mayor of Lamego, will introduce the topic “Sustainability and Cohesion” to the mayoral debates.
On Sunday afternoon, the resolution of the XXVII Congress of the ANMP will be discussed and then voted on, featuring the main conclusions and commitments of the municipalities for the upcoming term.
