The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) announced in a statement on the website of the Republic Prosecutor’s Office in Portalegre that the defendant was sentenced by a verdict from the Central Civil and Criminal Court of Portalegre, issued on the 4th of this month.
Contacted by the Lusa agency, a source from the MP highlighted today that the crimes occurred in Póvoa de Varzim, Porto district, in Elvas, Portalegre district, and in Estremoz, Évora district.
The statement mentioned that the man was sentenced to a single term of five years in prison for committing two crimes of domestic violence against his wife and daughter.
“The defendant began dating the victim in 2015, and their daughter was born in 2016,” as stated by the MP, adding that throughout this period, while living in Póvoa de Varzim, “they ended and resumed the relationship multiple times” and eventually married in 2022.
The court, according to the statement, found it proven that, during the relationship, “the defendant insulted, assaulted, and controlled the woman, often forbidding her from leaving the house” and that, on several occasions, the man “displayed aggressive behaviors” towards the daughter.
“Even after the victim moved to Estremoz, where she worked, the defendant continued with threats and made phone calls to the victim’s work colleagues to tarnish her image,” it stressed.
The MP noted that “the court considered the defendant’s actions a true physical and psychological siege of the victim,” highlighting “the aggravating factor” of having previously been “convicted for similar acts against the same victim.”
The defendant is also prohibited from contacting the woman for a period of three years, beginning from the date the verdict becomes final, with restrictions from her residence and workplace, monitored via electronic bracelet.
