Catarina Martins condemns “hate crime”, Jorge Pinto criticizes antisemitism

“The news from Sydney is devastating. Attacking families gathered for Hanukkah is an act of hate and absolute terror. This poison demands relentless combat and unwavering defense of life. A solidarity embrace to the Jewish community and all the victims,” reads a message posted by Catarina Martins, supported by BE, on her official account on social network X (formerly Twitter).

Similarly, in a social media note, Jorge Pinto, supported by Livre, expressed sorrow over the “tragic news” from Australia, “with reports of several deaths in a terrorist attack directed at the Jewish community in the country.”

“A sad reminder that antisemitism persists and continues to kill,” he stated.

Two attackers opened fire today on a crowd celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach in Sydney, in what Australian police described as a “terrorist act” against the Jewish community.

According to various media, at least 12 people were killed, including one of the two attackers, and three dozen injured were transported to local hospitals.

The President of the Republic has already expressed “deep dismay” at this “violent terrorist attack” and condemned “violence, especially that originating from hatred, notably antisemitism.”

Meanwhile, the Government, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned the attack, labeling it as “a heinous act of antisemitism.”
