A man closely associated with former President of Guinea-Bissau, Sissoco Embaló, was released without court appearances after being detained on Sunday in Lisbon on suspicion of smuggling and money laundering, the Judiciary Police (PJ) told Lusa today.
On Sunday, the PJ stated that the foreign national, who was not identified, would be questioned by a judge regarding measures of coercion. However, this did not occur because the main crime he is suspected of (smuggling) carries a maximum sentence of less than five years in prison.
The suspect, whose association with Sissoco Embaló was confirmed to Lusa by sources linked to the investigation, was detained on Sunday by the PJ at the Figo Maduro Military Airport in Lisbon. In his luggage, authorities found approximately five million euros in cash, the origin of which will now be investigated by the authorities.

The Judiciary Police detained a foreign national at dawn, upon his arrival at Figo Maduro airport, on suspicion of smuggling and money laundering. He had five million euros in cash in his luggage.
