The 2024 award is presented to “an individual distinguished by their work in environment and landscape,” and João Gomes da Silva “has dedicated his professional life, individually or in collaboration, to the critical production of Landscape,” the University of Évora stated in a recently released announcement.

The Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles Award is an initiative of the Institute of Agronomy of the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora, Causa Real, the Order of Engineers, the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects, and the Lisbon City Council, with the collaboration of the family of Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles.

This accolade aims to annually honor the vision of professor and landscape architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, who passed away in November 2020, recognizing individuals who have excelled in the areas of environment and landscape with careers devoted to civic service.

João Gomes da Silva, born in Lisbon in 1962, holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Évora, where he served as an assistant professor from 1987 to 1994.

He currently teaches at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture USI in Switzerland.

Additionally, he was a visiting professor at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design.

In 1997, João Gomes da Silva, along with Inês Norton, founded Global Arquitectura Paisagista, “forming a group that fosters thought and practice about Landscape, based on the interpretation of contemporary economic, social, and cultural transformations.”

The award will be presented to João Gomes da Silva at a ceremony in the City Hall of Lisbon on May 26.
