The festival will kick off on May 8 at Recreios da Amadora, featuring Mário Laginha along with Julian Argüelles on saxophone, Romeu Tristão on double bass, and João Pereira on drums, reinterpreting the compositions of Carlos Paredes through the lens of jazz.
The 13th edition of Amadora Jazz will take place over four days—from May 8 to May 11—across venues including Recreios da Amadora, Cine-Teatro D. João V, and the Alfornelos Auditorium. This year’s lineup will, for the first time, include an artist residency.
Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente and American percussionist Hamid Drake will participate in an artistic residency in Alfornelos leading up to their performance, with recordings set to be released by the Jazz ao Centro Clube label, a festival partner.
In addition to Mário Laginha’s quartet and Luís Vicente with Hamid Drake, the Amadora Jazz lineup this year features bassist Carlos Bica, performing as part of a quartet to showcase his album “11:11,” released last year. American pianist Myra Melford will lead a new formation, the Splash Trio.
The closing concert will be conducted by GeraJazz, a jazz ensemble born from the Orquestra Geração context under the direction of Eduardo Lála.
