“We are going to propose in parliament an amnesty for all police officers […] who have been accused of, in the line of public service and in the defense of people, interfering with the physical integrity, or the life, or the personal situation of criminals. That is, we will propose that the situation of all police officers who had to use a weapon in service, who had to use force in service, to defend us, citizens, is reviewed,” he stated.
André Ventura spoke to journalists before a visit to the PSP station in Parede, in the municipality of Cascais and the district of Lisbon, where he arrived more than half an hour after the time communicated to journalists.
“They may have committed a crime at that moment, but they did so to defend us. And today what we have is a lack of capacity to defend ourselves,” he stated, arguing that “the police have no authority to do anything” and “must stop being afraid to exercise it.”
The Chega leader indicated that the party would propose that situations be analyzed on a case-by-case basis and argue that when “the police officer has acted in a dangerous situation, in defense of safety and the population, they should be amnestied.”
