The People’s Monarchist Party (PPM) has announced that for the upcoming national legislative elections on May 18, Gonçalo da Câmara Pereira, the president of the party’s National Political Commission, will head the PPM list for the Lisbon electoral district.
The PPM further disclosed plans to run in all electoral districts, aiming to return to the national parliament, a presence they have maintained in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores since 2008.
Gonçalo da Câmara Pereira, a longstanding member of the PPM, currently leads the party with the aim of securing parliamentary seats for the Lisbon electoral district, as detailed in a statement from PPM’s secretary-general, Paulo Estêvão.
The PPM, which participated in last year’s coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and CDS-PP that won the elections, is absent from this new coalition.
In late March, PSD’s secretary-general Hugo Soares stated that the PPM was excluded from the pre-electoral coalition for the upcoming elections due to an inability to agree on positions.
Controversy has emerged recently over the new coalition name, which now excludes the PPM.
On Friday, the PPM filed an appeal with the plenary session of the Constitutional Court against the decision that approved the new designation “AD – Coligação PSD/CDS,” claiming the decision lacks foundation, according to Paulo Estêvão.
Upon the filing of this appeal, the Constitutional Court is required to make a decision within forty-eight hours. The plenary of the Constitutional Court comprises 13 judges.
The Constitutional Court had rejected an earlier proposal “AD – Aliança Democrática – PSD/CDS” for the anticipatory elections on May 18, arguing it might mislead voters as it excludes PPM, unlike the previous year’s elections.
The latest ruling concludes that there is no objection to the coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PPD/PSD) and the CDS — People’s Party (CDS-PP) contesting under the acronym “PPD/PSD.CDS-PP” and the name “AD — Coligação PSD/CDS” in the districts of the mainland, Madeira, Europe, and beyond.
