Hundreds of people gathered today afternoon at Praça do Príncipe Real in Lisbon for a demonstration organized by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers – Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN). This event is part of a nationwide day of action, which also included gatherings this morning in Porto and Coimbra.
The demonstration is set to conclude at Cais do Sodré, where Tiago Oliveira will deliver a speech.
Under the slogan ‘Higher Wages and Better Pensions – Defend Public Services and State Social Functions – Social Security, Health, Education, Housing,’ the protest in Lisbon brought together workers from the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, Santarém, Portalegre, Beja, Évora, and Faro, as previously announced by the union center.
To enable widespread participation, “several sectors” have issued strike notices, including commerce, services, and hospitality, according to the union confederation’s secretary-general.
The CGTP’s demands include a minimum pay increase of 15%, with at least 150 euros for all workers. Additionally, they call for raising the national minimum wage from the current 870 euros to 1,000 euros.
