Na Póvoa de Lanhoso, in the district of Braga, during the presentation of Fátima Alves as the candidate for the Coalition PSD/CDS-PP — Juntos Pela Nossa Terra in this year’s local elections, the leader of the Social Democrats remarked that in 2024, the Portuguese will pay less income tax, which is why their refunds are smaller this year.
Montenegro recalled that the initiative always came from the PSD, but the decisions to lower the IRS in 2024 were also taken by the PS, led by Pedro Nuno Santos, who has accused the AD of a “trick” in reducing the IRS, resulting in lower refunds this year.
“The Socialist Party, in its eagerness to criticize this Government, even forgot that the IRS reduction in 2024 was already included in the 2024 State Budget, which was approved by the previous Socialist Government, and when we came into power and proposed to reduce the IRS further, it was the Socialist Party and Chega that approved a different reduction than what we wanted,” recalled the PSD leader.
Luís Montenegro finds it “fantastic and strange” to see the PS “upset with what they themselves decided.”
“It is indeed a fantastic thing. But it clearly shows who is acting in good faith and who is lost in saying everything and its opposite. Lost in promising everything and lost, unaware that they are speaking ill of themselves,” accused the acting Prime Minister.
