House where writer Jorge Amado grew up was invaded and robbed

The house where the renowned writer Jorge Amado lived until the age of 18 in Ilhéus, southern Bahia, Brazil, was broken into on Friday, with several items from the author’s collection being stolen.

As of Saturday, the perpetrators of the crime had not yet been identified.

The property, which is open to visitors, had been closed since January for restoration work. During this period, most of Jorge Amado’s collection, including books, sculptures, and furniture, has been on display at the Municipal Theater. However, the suspects managed to steal a television and other items that were in a sealed showcase, according to Ilhéus City Hall.

Damage was inflicted on the doors and glass windows of the house.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

Ilhéus City Hall also stated that it is conducting an “assessment of the damages.”

“The City Hall condemns any act of vandalism against the cultural heritage of the city and reaffirms its commitment to preserving the memory and history of Ilhéus,” stated the announcement.

Jorge Amado was born in 1912 and passed away on August 6, 2001.
