Insurance Movement launches campaign to raise awareness against ‘fake news’

António José Seguro, who is contemplating a potential presidential candidacy, launched this movement in January to enhance civic participation among Portuguese citizens, denying any links to a possible electoral campaign at the time.

Today marks the launch of a public awareness campaign against ‘fake news’ (false news) on social media, representing the first public initiative of this movement.

“This project aims to protect democracy from its adversaries and shield citizens from various forms of manipulation,” the statement explains.

The initiative underscores the “growing number of false news reports” and the “sensitive national context” as justification for this campaign.

“Combating misinformation requires continuous commitment and active participation from everyone. Each individual plays a crucial role by verifying the authenticity of information before sharing it, contributing to a safer and more reliable digital environment,” it advocates.

The campaign features nine posts under the banner “False or True? Learn to Identify,” offering advice such as checking a story from multiple sources, noting the date, and reading before sharing.

Additional messages in the campaign warn that disseminated images may be fake and advise reconsideration if a news item evokes fear, anger, or hatred.
