The National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested two young individuals, aged 17 and 18, on Friday for theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle, as well as driving without a legal permit, in Almada municipality.
In a statement released on Saturday, the security force detailed that the arrests took place during a road inspection operation.
GNR officers “observed two individuals exhibiting suspicious behavior after passing by, which prompted them to conduct an approach.”
“During the inspection, it was discovered that the vehicle they were using had been reported stolen. During the operation, one of the suspects attempted to flee on foot but was immediately intercepted nearby,” stated the GNR in the same report.
The operation led to the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the car, which will be returned to its rightful owner, along with a bottle of nitrous oxide.
“It was also found that one of the suspects had a criminal record related to drug trafficking, possession of prohibited weapons, and physical assault,” the statement continued.
Both individuals were charged with the theft and use of the vehicle and for lacking legal authorization to drive.
The detained individuals are to be presented before the Judicial Court of Sintra for the imposition of coercive measures.
