Consulate of Portugal in New York inaugurates gatherings to promote talent

The Consul-General of Portugal in New York, Luísa Pais Lowe, detailed a new initiative aimed at promoting cultural diplomacy and the internationalization of Portuguese culture. The consulate’s new premises are set to serve as a “showcase for Portugal in various fields.”

“Portugal excels in cultural sectors. It has much to offer and display to the world. Moreover, culture serves as a powerful diplomatic tool, offering a gentle and beautiful means of communication. It’s vital, in today’s complicated world, to convey messages through art and culture,” explained the Portuguese diplomat.

The first artist to be featured in this event series is Isabel Pavão, a New York resident whose two artworks are displayed in the Consulate.

The Wednesday gathering, which will bring together both Portuguese and American guests, will have Isabel Pavão discussing her career and significant exhibitions. The event will conclude with a reception featuring Portuguese cuisine and wines.

While future guest artists have not been disclosed, Luísa Pais Lowe emphasized the intention to cover a broad range of cultural fields where Portuguese presence is felt in New York, working within the space constraints of the Consulate building.

The event may not occur monthly due to limited human resources. However, the Consul-General envisions a quarterly frequency and hopes to organize the next meeting in June, in celebration of Portugal Day.

“The aim is to instill in the community a habit of visiting the Consulate every three months. It’s also a move to create closer ties with the community and an opportunity for individuals to become better acquainted with one another. Essentially, we have several objectives here,” Luísa Pais Lowe conveyed.

The event is supported by the Camões Institute.
