Legislative? Porto is divided between PSD and PS (without showing dominance)

The electoral district of Porto is set to elect 40 deputies to the Assembly of the Republic in the upcoming elections on May 18. This year, 1,591,445 voters are registered, which is 502 fewer than in 2024, and there are 18 parties in the running, an increase of two from the previous elections.

During the March 10, 2024 elections, the PSD triumphed over the PS by a margin of 1,012 votes, securing one more seat in Parliament than their rivals. Notably, Livre managed to win a seat in the district for the first time.

This marked a reversal in fortunes for the Social Democrats, who had previously lost to the PS in the 2019 and 2022 elections.

Historically, deputies representing Porto have been shared among parties such as the PSD, PS, BE, PCP, and CDS-PP, until the 2019 elections when PAN managed to elect its first deputy from the district.

The landscape shifted again in the 2022 legislative elections when Iniciativa Liberal (IL) and Chega secured their inaugural deputies in Porto.

During the 2024 elections, Chega increased their representation from two to seven mandates.

The 2024 elections saw the Democratic Alliance (comprised of PSD, CDS, and PPM) win the district with 14 deputies, followed by the PS with 13, Chega with seven, IL and BE with two each, and both PCP and Livre securing one seat.

In preparation for the 2025 elections, the AD — a coalition of PSD and CDS — has announced its endorsement of Paulo Rangel, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, with Nuno Melo, the Defense Minister and leader of the CDS-PP, as their second candidate.

The PS has nominated Fernando Araújo, a 56-year-old doctor and former NHS director, while Chega is again supporting deputy Rui Afonso, and IL has backed Carlos Guimarães Pinto, a former party leader who stepped down in 2019.

BE is fielding deputy and former MEP Marisa Matias once more, CDU has chosen journalist and current deputy Alfredo Maia, whereas Livre is fielding engineer Eduardo Pinto.

The PAN is led by manager Hugo Correia. Volt Portugal is banking on nurse Ricardo Loureiro, who is based in London, UK. The Social Liberal Party is represented by mechanical engineer Daniel Amaral, and the Socialist Workers’ Party (PCTP/MRPP) by technician João Pinto.

Leadership for the People’s Monarchist Party (PPM) is taken by António Maia, while Together for the People (JPP) supports university professor José Vieira. The Reagir-Incluir-Reciclar Party (RIR) is represented by paver Vitorino Silva, popularly known as “Tino de Rans,” and the New Right (ND) is fielding businessman Israel Pontes, a former member of Chega.

Ergue-te has selected supermarket supervisor Bruno Rebelo, ADN’s frontrunner is Bruno Fialho, a flight attendant, and economist Manuel Leite represents Nós, Cidadãos.

As per the 2021 Census, the district of Porto has 1,785,405 residents, reflecting a decline of 31,770, or 1.7%, from 2011, when it had 1,817,175 inhabitants.
