The leader of Chega, André Ventura, emphasized during a rally in Guarda, as the official campaign period for the legislative elections set for May 18 commenced, that the Chega party is not destructive or focused on bringing others down. “Chega stood by the right measures when it needed to and opposed measures when necessary,” Ventura declared.
Before a luncheon attended by over 200 people, Ventura responded to comments from PSD leader Luís Montenegro, who, during a rally on Saturday night in Santa Maria da Feira, accused Chega politicians of maintaining a “destructive attitude” and of being incapable of being beneficial even to themselves by voting against the AD on issues such as tax reductions and immigration policies.
Ventura contended that Chega is only destructive towards issues painfully handled by the Prime Minister, specifically highlighting its zero tolerance for corruption.
“They might say we are destructive, but if that means destroying and annihilating all the corruption in our country, then yes, we are destructive, we are absolutely destructive in Portugal,” Ventura asserted.
He emphasized that Chega will not alter its stance or messaging despite the PSD’s assertion that they do not consider Chega as part of a governmental solution.
“Our fight against corruption is to be taken seriously because we understand that, at the end of the day, it’s not just the numbers that count, but also the conscience and truth of knowing we are on the right side,” Ventura added.
