A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder against a 51-year-old woman in a public area in Beja on May 4.
The crime, witnessed by passersby, was allegedly motivated by “apparently trivial reasons,” according to a statement from the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) released on Wednesday.
The statement detailed that “the attacker inflicted gratuitous violence on the victim, causing injuries that posed a life-threatening risk, had it not been for the intervention of bystanders and the swift activation of emergency services.”
The PJ clarified that “no intimate relationship was determined between the parties involved.”
The man has been taken to a judicial interrogation and is now in preventive custody.
The investigation is being led by the Department of Investigation and Penal Action of Beja.
