The question has been asked repeatedly since the campaign began, but Rui Tavares, with characteristic prudence, has insisted on avoiding discussing specific numbers, claiming it is bad luck. However, at the Carvalhos Fair in Vila Nova de Gaia, inspired by Lina da Fruta, a market vendor for 57 years, he provided a glimpse into his intentions.
“Livre aims, for example, to compete for fourth place as a party against the Liberal Initiative (IL),” Rui Tavares disclosed. Coincidentally, the campaign takes place in Braga, the hometown of IL’s president, Rui Rocha, who is also present in the city today.
Lina da Fruta challenged Tavares, questioning, “Why are you afraid to speak out? We need boldness. Are you a bit shy, why?”
Not waiting for a response, she quickly added, “If you came to the market, I would teach you the commercial creed.”
In a lively conversation filled with laughter, the vendor advised him to “hold your head up and maintain posture. Speak the truths without fear.”
Given the chance to reply, Rui Tavares expressed gratitude for the advice and confidentially mentioned he would follow it.
He promptly put this into action by stating that Livre has a large and competent team ready to participate in legislative processes, parliamentary inquiry commissions, government oversight, or even joining the government.
Lina da Fruta, an avid viewer of political debates, wished him luck and urged him not to forget what he heard.
“I will surely adjust,” promised Rui Tavares.
Later, the Livre leader encountered Dona Rosa, who aims to reach the age of 100 like her mother. She interrupted only to tell him, “You are more charming in person.”
“On television, you seem older,” emphasized Dona Rosa before continuing with her shopping.
