“When we hear Luís Montenegro talk about pensioners, we can only confirm that he does not know the reality of pensioners in Portugal. Just yesterday, he congratulated himself on the fact that the IRS had been reduced, benefiting pensioners,” stated Pedro Nuno Santos at a campaign lunch in Olhão, in the Faro district.
The PS secretary-general asserted that the prime minister is unaware that a large majority of pensioners in Portugal do not pay IRS because their pensions are low.
“In reality, the reduction of IRS means nothing to the majority of pensioners, and for those who do pay IRS, I have encountered several throughout this campaign who approach me with their tax authority statements,” he explained.
Pedro Nuno Santos gave the example of “Mrs. Maria Camélia, who says she has to pay 860 euros and doesn’t know how.”
He criticized, “Luís Montenegro does not know what he is talking about because he does not know pensioners, and only someone who does not know pensioners talks about the IRS for a pensioner who does not earn enough to be able to pay IRS.”
