“The Socialist Party (PS) is going to win the Algarve, I have no doubt about it, and if you’ve been paying attention, you could confirm it during our tour here,” Pedro Nuno Santos told journalists after visiting the open-air producers’ market in Quarteira, in the municipality of Loulé. He was accompanied by Jamila Madeira, the PS’s lead candidate for the Faro district.
In the last legislative elections, about a year ago, Chega’s victory ended the PS’s dominance in the Faro district, which had lasted since 2025.
The market visit was marked by the music of an accordionist playing lively tunes, with comments such as “you need to cheer the crowd.” An elderly lady, despite needing to leave, waited for a rose from Pedro Nuno Santos. “I’m grateful to have been near you, and I’d like you to give me a little rose, let’s pretend it’s a Mother’s Day rose,” she said, also asking him to take good care of “our Portuguese people.”
“I certainly will,” responded the socialist leader.
At the beginning of this visit, the candidate for prime minister was approached by two women eager to take a photo with Pedro Nuno Santos.
“We belong to the Roma community, and we really wanted to be with you. This is just to annoy Chega, we stand with Nuno Santos. We see you often on television, and now we’re close to you,” said one of the women.
Pedro Nuno Santos replied with a “thank you very much” and offered them roses.
Later, at a nearby stall, he sipped a Medronho liqueur to “tune his voice,” accompanied by a toast. “All sopranos drink this,” joked Jamila Madeira.
Along the way, he listened to complaints about income tax from someone who used to pay 15 euros but now has to pay 220 euros. “They gave with one hand and took with the other,” a man complained, referring to the government.
Pedro Nuno Santos responded, “We’re going to change things, we’re going to change, it’s all tricks, we’ll defeat them.”
Others requested more security for Quarteira, better public transport, more housing, a solution for the “miserable pensions of the elderly,” and improvements in the health system, which in Portugal “is a disaster.”
Pedro Nuno Santos also took the opportunity to discuss the zero VAT measure on the food basket before heading to a lunch rally in Olhão, also in the Faro district.
