“At this moment, a central bloc would be a problem for the country”

“A central bloc at this moment would pose a challenge for the country as it would hand the opposition to the far-right,” stated Rui Tavares to journalists following a visit to the Alverca Fair in Vila Franca de Xira, Lisbon district. Tavares emphasized that this scenario is a possibility that the President of the Republic might consider when stating that it doesn’t matter who comes first.

The Livre leader highlighted another option on the table, advocating for a return to a “more responsible, more original, and more genuine” parliamentary system, which involves a government seeking dialogue with parliament.

Rui Tavares criticized the government of António Costa (PS) for its arrogance due to the absolute majority, noting that it disregarded parliament, and mentioned that Luís Montenegro’s (PSD) government shares the same arrogance without having an absolute majority.

“I will give you an example: on the day of the blackout, the seat of the executive, where the prime minister and ministers were located, is just 200 meters from parliament, yet no minister came to the Assembly of the Republic to engage with parliamentary groups,” he remarked.

Tavares believes a prime minister must engage in daily dialogue with all parliamentary groups, pointing out that in various European countries governments require the support of four or five parties.

“A government that Livre supports, participates in, or leads will always engage daily with parliamentary groups, as it is the duty of an executive,” he stressed.

He underlined that recent governments have paid “very little” attention to parliament, which lies at the heart of current problems.

Commenting on the President’s statements about governing conditions, Tavares suggested that the President is outlining his perspective on what he will do starting May 19, without influencing the voting process.

The Livre spokesperson reiterated that if a left-wing majority emerges, it will be part of the solution; should a right-wing government take form, Livre will be part of the opposition.

“A real, honest, and vigorous opposition that will defend all rights,” he assured.
