The Diocese of Setúbal announced on Wednesday that Cardinal D. Américo Aguiar had extended his greetings to Robert Prevost, who was elected as the leader of the Catholic Church on May 8.
“Our bishop, Cardinal D. Américo Aguiar, is still in Rome and has already embraced Pope Leo XIV. Through him, the entire Diocese of Setúbal embraces its new Pope and wishes him a long and fruitful pontificate,” was stated on the Diocese’s social media accounts.
Américo Aguiar mentioned that “Pope Leo surprised us [on May 10] with his visit to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Genazzano,” according to a statement issued on Sunday.
“With mixed feelings, as we still mourn the departure of our beloved Pope Francis, a joyous and hopeful crowd, not only in St. Peter’s Square but in every corner of the world, welcomed Pope Leo XIV almost as if in an embrace,” he stated during the homily he presided over at his titular church of St. Anthony in Via Merulana, Rome, on the occasion of Good Shepherd Sunday.
Genazzano is an Italian town located in the Lazio region, within the province of Rome.
It should be noted that Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
The new Pope was born in Chicago, United States, has Spanish ancestry and Peruvian nationality, and is a member of the Order of St. Augustine.
