Teresa Costa Macedo. CES expresses deep regret and recalls commitment

The Economic and Social Council (CES) released a statement on its website expressing profound sorrow over the passing of Teresa Costa Macedo, a former advisor to the CES. The council extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the National Confederation of Family Associations (CNAF), highlighting her dedicated participation and contribution to the institution’s work for over two decades.

Teresa Costa Macedo, who served as Secretary of State under the governments of Francisco Sá Carneiro and Francisco Pinto Balsemão, and was the current president of the National Confederation of Family Associations, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82, as confirmed by a family source to Lusa.

She was hospitalized at Santa Cruz Hospital in Lisbon due to a pulmonary infection.

During her political career, Teresa Costa Macedo served as Secretary of State for Family Affairs during the administrations of Francisco Sá Carneiro (1980-1981) and Francisco Pinto Balsemão (1981-1983).

She held a degree in Philosophy from the University of Lisbon and was vice-president of the European Women’s Union and a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union.

In recognition of her service, she was awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit on June 10, 1992, and the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique on March 11, 2000.
