
At least six members of parliament under the age of 30 are set to take seats in the Assembleia da República in the upcoming legislative session.
The majority, who are already incumbents, belong to the Chega party and are female. However, there remains an unresolved case involving the AD party, which could potentially increase the number of sub-30 members to seven.
Meet the young MPs:
Madalena Cordeiro (21 years old)
The youngest member of Chega will remain the youngest in Parliament. Elected from the Lisbon electoral district, where she was ranked 10th on the list and the party secured 11 seats, she was born on December 18, 2003, in Évora and is currently studying Law at the Catholic University.
Lina Pinheiro (25 years old)
The leader of Chega’s Youth wing in Vila Nova de Famalicão is the only newcomer among the under-30s in Parliament. She was the fifth candidate elected by the party in the Braga district. According to her Facebook page, she is a nutrition student and was born in Toronto, Canada.
Rita Matias (26 years old)
Entering her third legislative session, Rita Matias is a prominent figure in André Ventura’s party. The president of the Chega Youth wing was elected from the Setúbal district. She holds a degree in Management and is currently pursuing a master’s in Political Science and International Relations.
Ana Gabriela Cabilhas (28 years old)
The youngest deputy in the AD also secured re-election from the Porto district. A master’s holder in Nutritional Sciences, she was previously part of the parliamentary committees on Health, Education and Science, and Culture, Communication, Youth, and Sports.
Daniel Teixeira (29 years old)
An accountant and a board member of the Chega Youth, this familiar face in Parliament is currently pursuing a master’s in Administrative Management.
Miguel Costa Matos (30 years old)
A former president of the Socialist Youth, he first entered Parliament at the age of 25 in the 2019 elections. The socialist was re-elected in 2024 and again recently. Miguel holds a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and a master’s in Economics.
Martim Arnaut Syder (30 years old)
Though he did not secure a direct election from the Coimbra district, Martim could return to Parliament if Rita Alarcão Júdice, the district’s top candidate, retains the position of Minister of Justice. The young social democrat is an economist with a master’s degree in Finance.
