
Today, BA announced that in May, the number of unemployed increased by 197,000 compared to the same month in 2024.
Compared to April, the number of unemployed in Germany fell to 2,919,000 in May, a decrease of 12,000 people, amidst a context of “weak” spring recovery.
Seasonally adjusted, the number of unemployed rose by 34,000 in May compared to the previous month.
“The spring reactivation, which has now ended, was generally weak. The labor market is not receiving the necessary impetus to reverse the trend, so we expect unemployment numbers to continue rising in the summer,” stated BA President Andrea Nahles in the announcement.
Underemployment, which also considers labor policy and short-term incapacity for work, decreased in May, seasonally adjusted, by 2,000 people compared to the previous month, totaling 3,602,000, indicating an increase of 58,000 from the previous year.
In May, 952,000 people received unemployment benefits, 95,000 more than a year ago.
Additionally, 3,948,000 people – 7.2% of the active population – benefited from basic social benefits for job seekers in May, 66,000 fewer than a year ago.
In May, 634,000 vacancies were registered at BA, a reduction of 67,000 compared to the previous year.
Since October 2024, 375,000 candidates for a training vacancy registered at employment centers, 11,000 more than in the same period last year.
Simultaneously, 441,000 training positions were registered, 28,000 fewer than a year ago.
