Geographer Alfredo Graça from Meteored Portugal forecasts that June will be “scorching,” with temperatures 6ºC above normal. However, the first month of summer could also see episodes of “showers, hail, thunderstorms, and other adverse meteorological phenomena.”
In a statement, the expert highlighted that “rain in the summer now takes on a predominantly convective nature (sporadic showers that are occasionally strong and irregular in their geographical distribution and intensity, hail, and thunderstorms) and rarely an Atlantic character.”
Regarding temperature, “it is generally possible to wear short-sleeved garments across most of the continent, although nights can still be cool or cold in some areas, mainly due to North quadrant winds blowing from the Atlantic.”
The forecasts indicate “persistently above-average temperatures for June, meaning scorching temperatures.”
The first half of June reveals “more pronounced positive thermal anomalies (much warmer than usual) in some regions of the country, namely: the districts of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, and Beja.” For these districts, temperatures are expected to be between 3 and 6ºC above normal.
For the Azores and Madeira, “more moderate positive thermal anomalies are expected, likely due to their insularity and maritime breezes.” The Portuguese Autonomous Regions are expected to have temperatures up to 1ºC above the climatological average.
Despite Meteored predicting “sporadically unstable weather” with showers, thunderstorms, and hail, the overall weather trend for June is mostly stable, dry, and sunny.
