Abstention? Association launches inquiry about voting abroad

In a statement, the association highlights that the survey aims to analyze “how recent legislative elections” abroad were conducted, which recorded an abstention rate of 77.76% and 32.18% null votes.

The association, which advocates for the civic and political participation of Portuguese citizens abroad and the improvement of services provided by the Portuguese State, seeks to understand why many Portuguese did not vote and, for those who did, whether the process was easy, what difficulties they faced, and why many did not include a copy of an identification document, resulting in the annulment of “many thousands of votes.”

According to TSP, Portuguese citizens abroad are invited to indicate their preferred voting methods: In-person at consulates, postal voting, or methods not yet available in Portugal but used in other countries, such as digital voting (remote electronic voting) and proxy voting.

Portuguese emigrants will also be questioned about the issues they most experience abroad, whether it be access to consular services, Portuguese language education, access to healthcare in Portugal, issues with Portuguese taxes, emigrant retirement, returning to Portugal, the voting process for Portuguese elections, or other concerns.

Chega was the most voted party among Portuguese residents abroad, receiving 26.15% of the votes, but maintaining the same number of elected deputies from these constituencies.

This party secured 92,192 votes in these constituencies, followed by the PSD/CDS coalition (56,460) and the PS (47,693).

Emigrants thus chose Chega and the PSD as the parties for the four deputies elected by the European circles (two) and Non-European circles (two).

Following this election, José Manuel Fernandes (AD) and José Dias Fernandes (Chega) were elected for the European circle, while José Cesário (AD) and Manuel Magno Alves (Chega) were elected from outside Europe.
