Marseille Film Festival with Portuguese films in world premiere

For the 36th edition of FIDMarseille, several Portuguese films and national co-productions have been selected, including “Fuck the Polis” by Rita Azevedo Gomes, part of the international competition.

The festival’s synopsis notes, “Twenty years ago, Irma, believing she was condemned, traveled to Greece. Today, she does it again, accompanied by three young people. From island to island, between the sea and the sky, they read, listen, and live, driven by the taste for beauty and clarity.”

“Fuck the Polis,” also the title of a poetry book by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge, features a script by Rita Azevedo Gomes and Regina Guimarães and is produced by the director herself.

Also having its world premiere in competition is the documentary “Bulakna,” the first feature film by director Leonor Noivo, produced by Terratreme Filmes with French co-production, exploring the diaspora of Filipino women.

Joining these two films is “Complô,” a documentary by João Miller Guerra about the Cape Verdean–Portuguese rapper and activist Ghoya (Bruno Furtado), who, according to the producer Uma Pedra no Sapato, “was denied from birth the right to be and feel Portuguese.”

The program also includes Portuguese co-productions in “All Roads Lead to You” (Ukraine), by artist Jenya Milyukos, and “Morte e Vida Madalena” (Brazil), by Guto Parente.

The International Film Festival of Marseille will open with “Kontinental” by Radu Jude and is scheduled to take place from July 8 to 13.
