State Secretaries in the Ministry of the Presidency increase to three

New appointments have been announced at the Ministry of the Presidency. Rui Armindo Freitas remains as Deputy Secretary of State for the Presidency and Immigration, with Tiago Macieirinha named to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and João Valle e Azevedo to the Presidency.

Rui Armindo Freitas, who hails from Guimarães, is a businessman and manager in the media and textile sectors. He holds a degree in economics and a master’s in Corporate Finance.

Tiago Macieirinha, a Ph.D. in Law and university professor in areas such as Law and Administrative Litigation, Constitutional Law, and Health Law, previously served as a legal advisor to the Prime Minister in the XIX and XX Constitutional Governments.

João Valle e Azevedo, aged 46, was elected deputy in the last two legislative sessions for the Lisbon circle. He served as deputy leader of the PSD Parliamentary Group, holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University, and is a university lecturer and economist at the Banco de Portugal.

In the XXIV Government, Leitão Amaro removed Paulo Lopes Marcelo from the position of Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and Rui Armindo Freitas will formally take on the Immigration portfolio in addition to his role as Deputy of the Presidency.

Rui Armindo Freitas, alongside Leitão Amaro, has been a prominent figure in the government’s changes to migration policy.

A statement published this evening on the Presidency of the Republic’s website indicated that Prime Minister Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received and accepted the proposal for the new secretaries of state.

Carlos Abreu Amorim, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, is now the only one without any Secretary of State, following the removal of sports from this ministry to Youth and the transfer of media oversight to Leitão Amaro’s ministry.

The President of the Republic inaugurated the Prime Minister and 16 ministers of the XXV Constitutional Government today, marking the second PSD/CDS-PP executive led by Luís Montenegro.

The inauguration of the secretaries of state is scheduled for Friday at 12:00 at the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda in Lisbon.
