The writer Armindo Reis, who stood out in children’s literature, has died.

Armindo Reis was a distinguished writer, renowned particularly in the genres of children’s literature and poetry characterized by its memorial, ecological, and communicative dimensions, the association describes in a statement.

His works for children include “Surpresas e encantos de Natal,” “À janela do meu tempo,” “O menino que nasceu com asas,” and “A mão cheia de sonhos.”

The APE notes that he was someone whose professional competence, solidarity, nonconformism, and generosity marked the institutions and personal places he belonged to, adding that the writer had been a member of the general assembly board for many years.

The wake for Armindo Reis will take place at the Basílica da Estrela starting at 11:00 on the 10th of June, Portugal Day. The funeral will follow at 14:00, proceeding to the Cemitério dos Prazeres.

Born in Cafede, Castelo Branco, in April 1954, Armindo Fonseca dos Reis graduated in Social and Human Sciences from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, also holding a Primary School Teacher Certification and the coursework for a Master’s in History and Philosophy of Science. He also studied music.

Teaching, painting, and literature, particularly for children, occupied most of his life. He held painting exhibitions throughout the country.

His prominence lay in children’s literature, authoring over a dozen books, some included in the National Reading Plan and recommended by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, such as “Amigo, amigão,” “Na cadeira mágica da avó,” and “A bola de cristal.”

He participated in several children’s literature juries, including the Almada City Award and the National Prize Maria Rosa Colaço, among others.

Armindo Reis also had contributions scattered across the press, authored song lyrics, collaborated on children’s programs on RTP, appeared in school manuals, and participated in presentations on children’s literature at congresses and colloquiums.

He began his teaching career in Basic Education in 1974, moving to Secondary Education in 1995.

He was currently a senior teacher at Escola Secundária Emídio de Navarro in Almada, the city where he resided.
