The University of Algarve (UAlg) has announced that its video, inspired by Japanese visual aesthetics, integrates science, art, and intercultural dialogue, dubbing it a “singular contribution” and “a bold and innovative proposal.”
The animation incorporates traditional elements of Japanese imagery, such as panel composition, decorative patterns, and cinematic landscapes, drawing direct references to anime and manga.
This graphic universe serves as a starting point to introduce the Ria Formosa Natural Park and UAlg’s research projects, using a universal visual language to unite scientific production.
UAlg aims to enhance its internationalization efforts and project the institution beyond borders with its participation in Expo Osaka 2025, ongoing until October in the Japanese city.
The video was produced by Fly Moustache, a company that originated from UAlg Tec Campus, UAlg’s business accelerator.
“This creative approach also reflects UAlg’s educational investment, including a degree in Animated Image, strengthening the link between education, research, and the creative industry,” UAlg stated.
“By combining innovation, storytelling, and Japanese visual culture, the University of Algarve proposes a new way of communicating science, bringing together laboratories, companies, industries, and other audiences, celebrating the meeting of cultures,” the statement continued.
UAlg emphasizes its position as “an institution combining innovation, creativity, and knowledge in building the society of the future.”
Portugal is one of 160 countries participating in the World Expo 2025 from April 13 to October 13, under the theme “Designing Future Societies for Our Lives,” taking place on Yumeshima Island, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, Japan.
At Expo 2025, Portugal’s theme is “Ocean: Blue Dialogue,” aiming to highlight its role as a global leader in ocean protection.
The national pavilion’s permanent exhibition will focus on the theme “A Country with a Past, Present, and Future Built with the Ocean.”
UAlg’s participation in Expo Osaka is part of an operation led by the Business Association of the Algarve Region (NERA), funded by European funds.
The Ria Formosa is a marshland in the Algarve region, spreading across the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, and Vila Real de Santo António, covering about 18,400 hectares along 60 kilometers, from Ancão Beach to Manta Rota Beach.
