
The electricity free market in Portugal expanded by 8,872 clients in April compared to March, while the regulated market lost 3,359 clients, totaling 835,898, according to data released today by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).
By the end of April, consumption in the free market accounted for 94.9% of the total recorded consumption in mainland Portugal.
Regarding market share, EDP Comercial retained its position as the main operator in the free market, holding 60.3% of clients and 37.4% of consumption.
In the industrial customer segment, EDP remained the leading supplier in terms of consumption share (26%), while Iberdrola led in supplying large consumers (26.3%).
As for natural gas, the free market accumulated over 1.1 million clients in April, with a net increase of 366 clients compared to March.
In the regulated market, there were 976 fewer clients than the previous month, totaling 438,802.
The total monthly consumption was 2,534 GWh, approximately 0.4% lower than in March and 2.5% lower than in April 2024, with the free market accounting for about 95% of the total consumption recorded in mainland Portugal in April.
Galp maintained its leadership in the industrial clients segment (34.8%) and in the large consumer segment (57.1%), while EDP held the lead in the small and medium-sized enterprises segment (38.9%) and the residential segment (38.5%).
