Departing from a meeting with the PS parliamentary group, José Luís Carneiro, in his first address as the socialist secretary-general, was asked about the government’s response to the proposal that government diplomas on immigration, set for discussion on Friday, be referred to the committee stage without a vote.
“Today, there was a meeting with deputies Pedro Delegado Alves and Eurico Dias, alongside government members. The meeting was inconclusive,” he stated.
José Luís Carneiro affirmed the PS’s willingness “to improve existing instruments” and expressed “goodwill” for committee-stage work, now waiting “for the government’s development and maturation regarding this proposal.”
“It is necessary for the government to state whom they wish to engage with. We are here to prevent the government from falling into Chega’s hands on matters that might lead to inhumane choices, against which we must fight,” he urged.
